![]() Many years in tree stands have wiped it away. To many bad stories have scared me straight. These days with the information age, I would never climb without my harness. I've been in stands that plain and simple should have killed me. We would nail boards in a tree and construct a homemade latter. Back in the day I never even heard of it. When I was far younger (and far dumber) I never used safety gear. I'm sure that is a very false sense of security. To each their own on the stand preference. Lots of deer die each year by ground hunters. You see more, and can get away with more. You get over it real quick.Īs far as if it’s imperative to use a stand. I work at asphalt plants and quarries, and have been on staircases that require a safety harness. Spend a lot of time on ladders, open grate floors, you name it. Jonny wrote:I have a bad fear of heights, and honestly prefer a hang on to my climber. You can also use Dan’s trick of hunting off of a step ladder. You will find that there are some areas that you will have to hunt on the ground as there are no trees. There is lots of info on here about ground hunting and there is nothing wrong with it. I hunt exclusively on the ground now as I am too old, fat, and busted up to carry stands and climb trees after a bunch of back operations. I was ALWAYS connected to the tree every second I was in the tree stand. If you are going to hunt from a stand don’t skimp on the safety equipment and buy a good harness and tether, and use them. ![]() If you know someone that has one you could give it a try. They are more versatile than a climber but there isn’t a top rail and if you are height sensitive it may be an issue for you. You need to have something to break up your outline. My hunting height was always determined by back cover. The higher you are the steeper the shot angle is. I used to use 25’ pull up cords made from para cord that I would clip to a belt loop. The stabilizer straps will make that stand rock solid. If you are height sensitive then I would recommend a tree stand with a top rail like a summit viper or Goliath AND a set of third hand stabilizer straps. I'm glad I found hunting - I definitely have the bug. Lastly, the idea of spot and stalk seems super fun but with the deep woods of Wisconsin, I've heard it's not plausible. Is a climber a good option to get my off the ground and control the height? Or does buck up buttercup play here? ![]() I'm comfortable enough at 8 - 10 feet but I also feel like a goober when I see stands as high as 30 feet. How imperative is it to use a stand? Is getting off the ground a necessity? What height is diminishing returns? I am gravitating towards bow hunting - mostly private and eventually public land. I bow hunted for the first time last year and used a 10-ish foot stand. I've bagged 2 does in SE WI with rifles from the ground. I found hunting later in life (started at 29 yo) by marrying into a hunting family. I just got the farmland DVD and it's great.
